Composed in 1927, the suite 'Capriol', his best-known work, draws on six French court dances of the sixteenth century (Basse-Danse - Pavane - Tordion - Bransles - Pieds-en-l'air - Mattachins). As is the manner of Vaughan Williams' Mass in G minor, written five years earlier, this is very much an early-20th Century work written in a Rennaissance idiom. The mood of the suite ranges from noble (the opening Basse-Danse), through graceful (Pieds-en-l'air) to frantic (the syncopated fireworks of Bransles). Originally written for string orchestra, the music translates well for the brass band, with its sudden changes of colour and timbre working very effectively. I've tried to keep as close to Warlock's original ideas as possible - this is definitely a transcription rather than an arrangement - hence the absence of percussion. Full score and
