Danse Macabre
by Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921)

arr. String Quartet by Matt Kingston   £1.95

Danse Macabre is one of the finest examples of 'programme music'; that is, music interpreting a story or picture.

Based on a poem by Henri Cazalis, Saint-Saëns composition of 1874 tells the story of how Death appears at midnight at Hallowe'en. In the opening bars, the clock strikes 13; Death summons the skeletons to dance for him, whilst he plays upon his fiddle. Towards the end, a cockerel crows, and it is time for the skeletons to return to their graves.

This music has been used in countless television programmes, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Jonathan Creek.

A challenging and highly entertaining arrangement for your next concert
